The Show Must Go On

Before I get started on the tutorials, I want to talk a little about soccer. Soccer—or more commonly known as football in other parts of the world—is a sport played between two teams of eleven players with a spherical ball. The game is played on a rectangular field with a goal at each end. The object of the game is to score by getting the ball into the opposing goal. The goalkeepers are the only players allowed to touch the ball with their hands or arms while it is in, but only in their penalty area. Outfield players mostly use their feet to strike or pass the ball, but may use their head or upper body to strike the ball instead. The team that scores the most goals by the end of the match wins. If the score is level at the end of the game, either a draw is declared or the game goes into extra time and/or a penalty shootout depending on the league or importance of the game like if it’s a final.
The duration of a match is two 45 minutes (plus any additional time, also called injury time, for a few minutes) in between there is a break of 15 minutes (halftime). If ninety minutes have passed and still shows a tie and a winner is needed, so an extension of two fifteen minutes halves are played. If after the extension there is still no winner, then there are penalties taken. Both teams take turns to take a penalty. The team that has scored the most after five penalty kicks is the winner. If there is a tie standing after five penalty kicks, then penalties will be taken until one team emerges with more penalty goals.
It is generally believed that the modern form of soccer originated in the UK, probably in England. We can assume England might be the country of origin for soccer because the oldest professional football club can be founded in England; Notts County FC. Because soccer became such a big sport in England, it started expanding internationally which formed the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) in 1904 and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) in 1954, the latter of which hosts the games to the Champions League and Europa League.
Currently, soccer is played by 250 million players in over 200 countries, making it the world’s most popular sport.
